Legends of the 9 HourREDSTAR – 10th March 2018

Combined Legends event with Pre’1990 Sports & GT

Some 20 cars qualified, headed by the Pre’1990 Porsches of Peter Jenkins and Wynand vd Merwe followed by Richard Schuhart and George Avvakoumides.  Peter won the first heat from Wynand with only a 1.4sec difference.  In 2nd heat Peter outbreaked himself into turn 2 – so Wynand won from Richard, George.

In the Legends category Jono in the Nova was quickest 2,15.5 – Jono got this down to 2,14.7 in the second heat after a spin and chasing Peter Lindenberg’s Mustang which won both heats… It was not however easy for Peter as Jonathan and Peter fought tooth and nail for line honours. It was truly spectacular racing to see this brute force in action.  Third was Mark in the 57 Bel-Air.  Initially Mark was off pace (he had never driven RedStar anti-clockwise).  He made up for it in the second heat and got down to Peter Lindenberg’s times but just not fast enough to get into Peter’s slip stream.  The Bel-Air is a double decker bus compared to the sleek Mustang.

Alan Poulter took all the honours in U2.  The Volvo handles exceptionally well at RedStar.  One of the best presented Legend cars is Francesco Lombardi in the Alfa Sprint.  The Alfa was second, followed by Roger Hougton in his conquers Alfa Guilia.  Ishmael Baloyi had a good race against Chris Carlisle’s Anglia with Stephen Brits blue MGB.  Les McLeod claimed his class win in the white MGB whilst achiever of the day went to Chris Visagie in his Anglia.

Our thoughts go to Clive Winterstein.  A clutch cable broke in practice – Tanya went home to fetch a spare but on return got caught up in a 3 hour traffic jam on the R21.  Just in time to arrive at the end of the day!

Commiserations to Wynand du Plessis (MGB) and William Kelly (MG Midget) both ran bearings.

Class winners:

            Ishmael Baloyi         GSM Dart

            Les McLeod             MGB

            Chris Visagie            Anglia

            Peter Lindenberg   Mustang

            Alan Poulter             Volvo
