Dezzi Raceway – Port Shepstone

Dezzi Raceway – Port Shepstone will long be remembered by those who made the journey… competitors, race engineers and spectators.
Des Gudzeit achieved what many have failed to achieve for some thirty five years including the writer who evaluated, five potential venues to put a viable facility together in KZN – After five tries Zwartkops concluded that it would be a difficult and problematic venture. Des has taken the bull by the horns and made it happen. Now we as participative motorists have somewhere to go midst a very beautiful setting in character with the typography of KZN. Most competitors found the track very daunting as they “hit the deck” however, after the weekends racing apprehensions diminished and there were many smiles. The track is very challenging with twelve/ thirteen directional changes compared to Zwartkops’ eight. Dezzi is the same length as Zwartkops, but with more turns lap times were some fifteen to twenty seconds slower. There is still considerable development work that is needed. In some respects it does remind me of the old Roy Hesketh – short, tight, spectacular. Public support was good, a remarkable feature was the large number of “old timers” from the day of Hesketh who came to visit the Legend Cars… pitted on the runway. Their knowledge and passion had not left them, many recording exact incidents and details of the legend cars that once raced in the days of Hesketh. Some including the writer got quite emotional as the past was recalled. Saturday, 11th April 2015 is a “Day to remember”.

Jonathan the Legend Hero of Dezzi, it was fitting that the first race to be won was a Chevron B8, a car that has components sourced from Jack Holmes team Ecosse – Red Chevron B8. The little Red Chevron B8 flew round the Dezzi circuit, winning by over 36 seconds from the Chevron B19 of Peter Jenkins. Jonathan mastered the tight curves of Dezzi with a magnificent display of controlled racing speeds. Beating anything that was thrown at him. This included the Pre 1984 low rider Cobras of Tony Martin, Mike McLoughlin, Colin Clay (Lola T70), Colin Ellison’s B19 and the Dot rated road/race tyred car of Mark du Toit T70 Spyder (Pre 1966 Le Mans Sports & GT). The orange Mustang of Franco Scribante was challenged all the way by the Nova of Jonathan. Ferdi van Niekerk Jnr was the third CoC Legend however, after posting an almost identical time as Franco/Jonathan had his rear brakes collapse on him on his first lap. The broken disc was collected by the U2 BMW of Dorian Garvie which punctured a tyre. Upfront Mark in the ZA Chevelle had a torrid time trying to keep off Clive Densham in his Alfa GT. The Alfa won! Ferdi van Niekerk Snr had a front stub axle break in the yellow banana Ford Galaxie – making him spectator for the day. This also happened to Colin Ritchie the so magnificently prepared Mini Cooper S had suspension failed after hitting a bump.

Pre 1966/68 LITTLE Giants

Chad ten Doeschate had a great day and improved his times by five seconds a lap over the course of the weekend. He was followed by Steve Truter’ (a good sight in Natal) in another GSM Dart. It was left to Terrance Botes to keep the Mini flag flying after the other Minis picked up trouble. Never say die, but Frank Copping’s Renault Dauphine had a class win. Les McLeod’s MGB however had a troubled weekend as did Jon Mckerchar whose little Porsche 718 ran bearings at the end of the first heat.
That was Dezzi – plenty action, plenty drama, plenty fun…
