Saturday 13th November

An emotional day as we came to an end of an era

Peter Lindenberg retires from competitive motorsport with a magnificent win in the Shelby Mustang.

The LEGENDS ran a combined event for the Pre 1969/70 Le Mans/ Sebring Production cars and LITTLE Giants bringing the 2021 season to a close.

Overall honours went to Mark du Toit in the blue Daytona Coupe followed by the Shelby Daytona and James Temple. Instantly they were chased hard by Chad in the Wilment Cobra until the roof dislodged itself. Unfortunately, Oliver Dalais GT40 broke his gearbox in practice. It was however the big Legend V8 cars that produced the thunder. Peter Lindenberg’s Mustang set the fastest time ever at 61.5 sec. Hennie Groenewald in the Mercury Comet, Seef Fourie JNR in the Chevelle and Jonathan in the Nova gave chase until the excellent drive from Hennie ended with a tyre delaminating.

Class ZB honours went to Paige Lindenberg, but she was not on her own and was chased by Marc Miller in the Alfa Giulia and Carel Pienaar in the Lotus Cortina. Roger Houston was a bit off pace slowed by a very hot Giulia which resulted in his retirement in the second heat giving the place to Francesco’s Alfa Sprint.

LITTLE Giants overall saw Gary Stacey with a resounding win followed by Jake Dovey and Terrance Botes in his Mini. Jake Dovey took over the yellow TAR Alfa and split the mini with a third relegating Kyle Brink to 4th place. Ben van der Westhuizen Lotus Cortina retired with an oil leak.

I do not think that the late John Meyers could have ever imagined the speed and handling of the Protea Ford. The Proteas are the most underrated motor engineering feat of the 1950s. John Ten showed just how effective they are and won Class B and championship in 2021. He was followed home by Ed Botes Britax Mini Cooper with Brain Frazer and Chris Williams in the well-turned-out Blue Cortina.

LITTLE Giants had a special invitation class on the day. Mark van Rooyen from KZN raced his Sunbeam V8 engineered Tiger. This is scary to drive but despite a number of high-speed wins come second in the invitation class (he retired in the first heat). Eugene Malan in his Renault R10 joined LITTLE Giants on the day. It was good to see a Renault in our midst again.

Overall, on the day it was Mark’s Daytona in Sports and GT, Peter Lindenberg in the Shelby Mustang in Legends. Marc Miller in the U2+. Djurk Venter in the Shelby Daytona and Terrence Botes in his Mini who won LITTLE Giants class A. Gary Stacey had gearbox problems in his Cortina 2nd heat but still won the championship.

A great day with some brave driving and a huge variety of cars.
