Kyalami – 12 July 2014
|
| The Legends series had a total entry of 46 cars for the day. July is a difficult month as we found many of our regular participants were away on holiday judging from the replies we got they could have had Legends race in the Kruger Park! Others were in Russia (one last visit before the next ‘cold war’ erupts) for the Bolshevik ballet! There were other reasons too – family budgets being squeezed so there were some twenty on AWOL. |
The Racing:
|
| ISP ( International Sports Prototypes) |
| The event was well represented however the ISP cars were out paced by Willie Hepburns 1990 + Opel Record. Nevertheless the Colin Frost Lola T70 MK3 driven by Neil Lobb looked magnificent and matched against the Chevron B19 of Colin Ellison and the dramatically fast Porsche 911 of Dino and Franco Scribante. |

Legends Saloons
|
| The big Legends and Little Giants Production Cars had a period representative field at Kyalami, with the Little Giants combined with the Pre-1966 Legends Production Cars. Up front it was the three Mustangs of Thomas Falkiner, Ferdi van Niekerk (Jnr) and Franco Scribante. Next up were the two Chevs of Jonathan du Toit’s Nova and Mark du Toit Chevelle. The latter two were on restrictor plates which put them right into the clutches of Clive Denshams Alfa GT, Trevor Tuck and Patrick Gearing. They provided a very good race. The under 2-litre class of Giulias with Larry Davies, Marc Miller and Gino Allasio, John Simpson Alfa GT and Rob Gearing in the BMW Tilux, produced a good spectical. In the midst of these cars was Shaun Cabrita in Streepie which was suffering from handling problems. |
| It was great to see the Botes family with their Mini’s with Terrance eventually heading the Little Giants category followed by Frank Copping in his French Racing blue Dauphine. Ford honours were upheld by Gary Stacey (Cortina) and Chris Visagie (Anglia). |
| The Racing: Franco Scribante who started from the back of the grid pitted with electronic problems on the first lap and retired. He made up for it in the second heat and got into the lead by lap three. |
| Overall winners on the day was Ferdi van Niekerk Jnr who despite having clutch problems came home the winner. Thomas Falkiner at last has his Mustang really going – pole and a good lead in the first heat only to have his steering fail on the second last lap. Jonathan du Toit had a long race with the Alfa’s in heat one and provided a good spectacle. In the second heat he got away from “pesky Alfas” after a change to the “set-up” but it was marginal. It was a tough day for Mark du Toit, he was beaten by the Alfas good and solid and then delayed by a gear selector problem. Marc Miller won the 2 litre class and Frank Copping the Little Giants category. Terrence Bote’s held up the Mini honours on the day. |

| Pre-1966/68 Le Mans Sports & GT |
| With Oliver Dalais away in Russia – “Bolshevik Ballet” in class A was between Mark du Toit’s Lola Spyder and Ross Lazarus magnificent GT40. It was very close until two thirds through the first heat when Mark attempting to close in on the GT40 had a wishbone snap – fortunately Mark was able to bring the car to stop but damage is rather serious. Ross had a good days racing and won both heats. Peter Lindenberg took class B honours after Jonathan du Toit Red Daytona had a massive off at the bottom of the mineshaft with a two 360’s. A big one. |
| Josh Dovey (Lotus Elan) and Evert Botha provided good racing in both heats however Josh’s distributor came loose in the second heat which slowed him down. The big dice was between Chad “Ten” and Dennis McBeath (Mpiti). Young Chad tried everything he could to pass Dennis and having got close then ran wide. Chad eventually finished 5th overall. Gary Swan had a lonely race but the surprise was Clive Rice who has now acquired a Cobra. Gary will have a real challenge on his hands once Clive comes to grip with this car. Nick Parrott won (dare we say at last) the Little Giants Sports Car race with a good win in his MGB but the most spirited (and a class win) drive was Ferdi van Niekerk Snr in the effective 356 Porsche Speedster. |
| The only Dart was in the hands of Ishmael Baloyi who went wide somewhere and lost part of his exhaust. The MG brigade was well represented, Les McLeod (MGB), Martin van der Merwe (MGB), Steven Kernick (MG Youth MGA). The two odd makes were the Porsche 356A of Clive Winterstein (back from his European trip) and Neil Oosthuizen in the Alfa Spyder – who finished lowly down in the results as a result of running out of fuel in the first heat. |
