Legends of the 9 Hour

Extract from the Legends Meeting, Sunday 24 January 2016 at ZOC and the annual awards function

ISP-2016-01-30-112

The chairman thanked all those who attended the meeting. The key issue of the meeting was to finalise our racing calendar for 2016.

It is imperative that we focus our racing calendar to embrace the difficult economic situation in South Africa. Racing tyres are not the only major cost factor but also the importation of spares. The number of away events / traveling costs is also of major consideration.

We must, in the current environment; “not go motor racing for the sake of racing” the focus must be on profile events which attract public and media interest.

The legends categories attract a lot of interest. The fields produce a huge variety of cars plus close and spectacular racing. The focus therefor must be on value added racing programmes. At the time of the meeting the situation with Kyalami was still unsolved. It subsequently been drawn to our attention, the SCC have decided that Kyalami is unaffordable and switched their two dates to Red Star (6th August and 19th November).

This may not suit legends and other alternatives may have to be considered. All told the present calendar is published below but is still subject to confirmation. It was also agreed that certain categories within legends may not do all the rounds on costs and event profile considerations.

The events calendar will also include two 45 minute and 30 minute events. The 45 minute being a prologue for “Sports & GT” and 30 minute “LITTLE Giants”. Once the calendar is more certain we will advise where and when these events will take place.

In summary the calendar presently is as follows:

  • 12th March – Red Star - LGND/U2/LG/SP&GT
  • 9th April – Zwartkops - LGND/U2/SP&GT/TA/ISP/COC + 30 minute for LG
  • 4th June – Dezzi - LGND/U2/LG
  • 16th/18th June – Kyalami - EXTREME FESTIVAL – Categories TBC
  • 6th August – Red Star - TBC
  • 10th September – Phakisa - LGND/U2/LG/SP&GT/ISP/TA – Possible Invitational Round (No TV)
  • 8th October – Zwartkops - LGND/U2/SP&GT/TA/ISP/COC + 45 minute for Sports & GT
  • 19th November – Red Star/ Kyalami - TBC

Legend Saloons – LGND+U2
LITTLE Giants – LG
Sports & GT – SP&GT
Trans-Am – TA
International Sports Prototypes – ISP
Champion of Champions – COC

ADDITIONAL CATEGORY

LITTLE Giants is now a very successful category, however there are a good number of older cars where owners feel that in order to be competitive they will need to modify their cars. In order to encourage these cars and owners to participate we will have an additional category for cars who are Pre’1962 (Pre’ Old Kyalami) and who do not lap Zwartkops faster than 88 seconds. The category will be known as the Grand Central 88 Club. We hope that this class will grow and who knows... may even have a separate event.

There are a good number of cars out there that can have the covers pulled off and go racing. We need a chairman of the 88 Club – somebody who will motivate prospective entrants.
