The 13th Passion for Speed – David Piper Internationals Zwartkops 1st Feb & Killarney 8th Feb

The Biggest and ‘Simply the Best’ is the only way to describe two phenomenal days of Motor Racing….
To sum up the days of ‘Passion for Speed’
Zwartkops had its biggest entry ever – almost 400 cars and bikes on track.
Despite inclement weather on Friday and the threat of flooding we had a dry track on Friday afternoon (for qualifying) and dry days on Saturday and Sunday, so the people came to experience a spectacle to which was of world standard.

We are at risk in not mentioning all the highlights of the days, however here are a few…

Roman de Beer, not many knew who this young and upcoming South African star was before the 1st of February – now we know he is very fast, understands the mechanicals of a car, and very competitive… despite a broken steering and an overheating car he gave Franco a real run for his money in the big green Lola. With Colin Clay they won class B in the SA TT with the blue Daytona. This is a great racer in the making.
Franco Scribante one of the busiest men of the day with his magnificent Chevron B19 , Mustang and GT 40, the latter unfortunately had a reliability problem in both SA TT Races.
Our heroes Sarel van der Merwe and Michael Briggs in the red (brakeless and gearbox seized) Daytona which entertained the crowd with their spinning ways.
Sarel and Hennie had the epic battle with the Plymouth & Galaxie. Then Sarel (In the SKF Legends Production cars). Made life very difficult for Thomas Falkiner in his Mustang and finally spinning the big red Galaxie coming out of turn 6 in the last lap.

Leeroy Poulter in Keith Hinckley’s Ford Thunderbolt came from the back of ZA in both races. His Dakar manoeuvre on the du Toit boys in turn 7, shows us what Dakar driving abilities he has… every centimetre counts…
It was also noticeable that by restricting the performance of the ZA cars the ZB cars are now close behind, Patrick Gearings Alfa Guilia ended the day just behind the two TAR Legend Chevs.
This is interesting and the technical advisors to Legends will look closely at monitoring and controlling the front runners, the FIA Mustangs from Europe were out paced by the our ZA and ZB cars which is of concern
The van Niekerk’s from Cape Town had two rough weekends. Juniors Mustang got caught up with Sarel and Hennie which made passing impossible. The Mustang then went soft and could not be repaired for Cape Town. For Senior the Yellow Galaxie had a troubled Zwartkops and then at Killarney in a non Legends race it was virtually written off by an irresponsible fellow competitor, the Daytona Coupe developed a mis-fire early in the Cape Town TT event so that was that. The only consolation for Senior was a class win in the LITTLE Giants at Zwartkops in his 356 Porsche.

The LITTLE giants put up a spectacular performance at Zwartkops – Ultimately won by Lawrence Davies in his Guilia but it was Marc Miller who won driver of the day. Shaun in the Mini Marcos, Chad in the Dart, Allasio in his Guilia, Keith ‘D Type made great racing up front. Pity that Trevor Tuck could not get his Guilietta to run properly. The spread of field was amazing.
Andre Reyneke debuted his stunning Volvo P1800 and then came Paul Periera in his 1960 BMW ‘700’. Stuarts ‘Jumbo’ Austin A35 sliced his way through the field in the second heat… and the crowd cheered…. ‘we want more’
In Cape Town the race of the day was between Sarel in the Galaxie and Jonathan in the Chev Nova, the Galaxie loved the long straight and Sarel made ‘ou Rooie’ so wide that Jonathan had to admit ‘Sarel is very good, there is no way that I could pass him’. For the crowd they were on their feet as these two raced side by side for each of the eight laps.
Larry Wilford got the taste of Legends when he raced Keith Hinckley’s Thunderbolt. When the gearbox was not broken he fought his way to the front but then found out how fast Franco is in his orange Mustang.

The Genie ISP race was incredible with Franco and Roman racing for line honours, the battle for third – Andre Bezuidenhout in his Martini Porsche, Rui in Oliver’s 917, Neil Lobb in the Gunston T70, Jonathan in the B8, and Colin in his 917 was scary to say the least. Carel Pienaar in the group 5 Camaro put up a very competitive performance and headed the Dutch Chevron B19 and the Ecosse of Steve Humble.
Peter Jenkins debuted his new Chevron B19 built by AJ. Unfortunately he spun in turn 4 and collected Willie Hepburn’s Capri. Another new car on the grid was Pim Pieterse’s Porsche –Audi 917. Lack of development time prevented this magnificent car from making the race however, another new face was Shayne Frost who acquitted himself with honours in his first time out in Colin’s blue GT 40.
The Castrol Edge 13th SA Tourist Trophy produced an unbelievable field of cars which were closely matched. Just where in the world are we to have 7 Ford GT 40’s, 3 Daytona’s, 2 Lola T70’s, 5 racing Cobra’s, 3 Lotus Elans….and and and, Corvette, FIA Mustangs, TVR, Lenhams, Mpiti, Darts – the battle of Marius Roberts (Ignition TV) and our great cricketer Clive Rice (‘is that the real Clive Rice who waved me through’ Rui Campos)

A Spectacular race that lived up to its expectations. Mark and Jonathan won the TT in the ‘Walls’ T70 but only by 4 seconds from Rui in the Craig Cummings red Lola. Third was Ross Lazarus and winner of the Index of performance, followed by the class B winners Roman de Beer and Colin Clay. Michiel Campagne in the Corvette was in his element but did slide the Corvette a bit too much and collided with a couple of GT 40’s along the way. The same happened at Killarney and damaged Kennet’s Swedish GT 40. The International GT40’s all come in FIA spec and were unfortunately out classed, we were lead to believe that they would come to South Africa with bigger engines, the disappointments in the event was the early retirements of Franco’s GT40 and the Klinkerts (fastest in the world) Cobra no 9.
Of all the small capacity cars Marius Roberts, despite gearbox problem beat Clive Rice in a similar Dart. The most impressive performance was from Josh Dovey in his Elan which was lapping in 1 min 14 secs, Allan Garrow debuted his FIA 1963 Cobra 289. This is a mangnificent motor car and out of all the TT cars was actually driven to and from the circuit on race day. This last happened in the early sixties when David Piper’s Ferrari’s were actually driven from Cape Town to Kyalami raced and driven back.
In Cape Town the ‘Walls’ T70 of Mark and Jonathan won the TT but not after a battle with Franco’s GT40 which unfortunately broke a cv in the latter part of the race. Ross came second not far behind the Lola. The two ‘LITTLE giants’ of Neil Oosthuizen in the white Dart and Shaun/Stuart in the Mini Marcos were great favourites with the crowd. Index honours went to Lindenberg in the blue Daytona…. Franco won the ISP races, the Genie Lola driven this time by Colin Clay had its share of problems.
By incorporating the Castrol Isle of Man TT championship event with the programme we had a good entry from the UK including former Isle of Man and British Champion Ian Simpson on a Suzuki (The Norton caught fire in the pits) SA hero Les van Breda came 2nd, however it was AJ Venter who must be hailed as rider of the day on a very unfamiliar machine to him a Yamaha 1100!!

Trans-Am was won by Willie Hepburn in the red Camaro. Ben Morgenrood his big rival was pushed off the track in the first heat causing his retirement. TA2 honours went to Anton Raaths in his Mazda, whilst TA3 and TA 4 went to Willem Vonk and Theo van Vuuren respectively.
The Ferrari Pablo Clark challenge was won by none other than Sarel van der Merwe in a Ferrari 360. The Richard Smeeton Ferrari from the UK had heating problems… pity.
A great two weekends of historic racing. Thanks to the staff, marshals, officials and sponsors at Zwartkops and Kilalrney. A full pictorial publication of the events to be produced shortly. TV coverage of Zwartkops, is tremendous, a number of dvds will be available from the Zwartkops office shortly.
