Red Star Raceway – 28th November 2015

Another new racing venue for the Legends
Although Redstar has been established for some six years now, the 28th November was the first official event for a racing series car event.
The circuit is 4km in length with a straight characterised by a large number of slow radius corners. So drivers have to work hard with lap times between 45 and 62 seconds slower than Zwartkops.
To measure compatible times with Zwartkops just add 60 seconds to get a general perspective. The circuit is undulated with the spectators area confined to pit and paddock.
The Legends of the 9 Hour Production Cars and LITTLE Giants
The U2 Class put up a tremendous performance. The Mini of Stuart Greig fought the contingent of Alfa’s all the way. A stone punctured the Mini’s windscreen which hindered him.
In the end however, Larry Davies was too strong and won on the day and the Championship.
Upfront it was the big V8’s of Mark du Toit in the Biscayne and Jono in the Black Widow 57 Chev Bel Air. Whilst Mark won overall, the battle upfront was not without drama. Clive Densham’s Alfa after initially leading, pushed Mark down to the line.
Initially Jonathan lead but had a series of spins (big ones). Left foot braking does not work when you hit the clutch instead of the brake pedal! In the second heat Jonathan recovered – the two big V8’s put up a spectacular battle with Jono winning the second heat.
Unfortunately Clive’s Alfa went off song in the second heat but still managed to creep over the line and take the Class ZA Championship for 2015.
Colin Ellison came along with his Alfa GT which unfortunately expired in a cloud of smoke in the first heat.
The LITTLE Giants
The battle was between Shannon Winterstein Lotus 23 and Chad Ten Doeschate in the Blue Dart. Chad made it to the line.
Our LITTLE Giants Champion for 2015 belongs to Terence Botes in the Maroon Mini. Fortunately he had accumulated enough points to secure his championship as the Mini steering rearranged itself halfway through the first heat.
Gary Stacey headed Class W and Dan Smith (Mini) Class U.
Pre-66 Sports & GT and ISP
Mark won both heats in the dot treaded Lola T70. He finished second overall on the day. Dino’s Tiga broke an oil pipe two laps before the end and stopped but not before Mark spun the Lola on Dino’s oil. The flag marshal got confused and flagged the race after 7 laps. Then the COC decided to back date the race to 6 laps – Mark was second at that stage trailed by Mike and Oliver Dalais in his blue GT40! Oliver’s GT40, sounded magnificent and was driven very effectively on this circuit. Jonathan was 5th overall in the red Daytona.
The big battle for fourth of the day (Pre-84 S>) was between George Avvakoumides and Fred Konig. It seems that George won this battle. In ISP category (3) George won his class in the Championship.
The other battle for Class B ISP was between the two 917 Porsches of Colin Frost and Peter Bailey. They were 3 points apart. Unfortunately Peter’s 917 broke a CV joint in practice but he managed to fix it for heat two, then Oliver beat him. In the end he scored only 3 points landing up with a tie between Colin and himself. However, Colin scored in one more event than Peter so the honours go to the white (Lucky Strike) 917 of Colin.
