As has become traditional, this year's South African circuit racing activities will start on an international and historic note at the Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria at the end of January.

The occasion will be the venue's annual Passion for Speed extravaganza for historical racing cars and motorcycle, to be held from Friday, January 27, Saturday, January 28 and Sunday, January 29.

This year's event will boast more than 300 entries - of which 34 will hail from overseas.

Heading up the show will be races for some 15 V8-powered Legend Saloon Cars, with the top entry that of motorsport maestro Sarel van der Merwe in a Ford Galaxie. He will face a challenge from people like Hennie Groenewald (Plymouth Fury), Leeroy Poulter (Black Widow Chev BelAir), Mark du Toit (Chevrolet Biscayne), Willie Hepburn (Studebaker Golden Hawk), Paulo Cavalieri (Ford Galaxie), Jonathan du Toit (Chevrolet Nova), Holland's Michiel Campagne (Ford Galaxie) and Ferdi van Niekerk (Ford Galaxie).

The event's  quickest races should be those of the International Sports Racing Club, which will celebrate 20 years of coming to South Africa. Entries will include a Can-Am tribute car, international Chevrons, McLarens, Ford GT40s and Porsche 917s.

The South African Tourist Trophy for Pre-1966/68 cars will see McLarens, Lolas, Ford GT40s, Daytonas, Cobras and Ginettas taking to the tarmac. The under two-litre class of the Pre-1966 Saloon cars will produce battles between Minis, Alfa Romeos, Lotus Cortinas, Volvos and BMWs. Unique events will be races for Pre-1966/68 Production Sports and GT racing cars, with six Austin Healeys, TVRs, Morgans and E-Type Jaguars.

The Pre-1984 Historic Production car races are expected to draw over 60 entries. The leading cars should be Chevrolet Comaros, Ford Mustangs, Volvos, Alfa Romeos, Volkswagen Sciroccos and Renault Gordinis.

The Historic Pre-1974 single seater races, Pre'1974 will have a BRM and ex-works Cooper Climax, plus more modern Wings and Slicks cars from the Formula Atlantic era.

The Pre-1966 Little Giants races should see GSM Darts, a Mini Marcos, a Volvo P1800, Mini Coopers, MGAs, MGBs, Alfa Giuliettas, a Marcos, Anglias, Cortinas and a Renault Dauphine in action.

The Pablo Clark Ferrari Challenge will boast an amazing array of Prancing Horse entries, headed by the Ferrari 430 of Jaki Scheckter. There will also be races for contemporary Extreme Supercars, with the entry list still to be determined.

As always, the event will boast much more than just motorsport, with a flea market, live entertainment, a Kiddies' Corner, and free access to the pits for everybody. Practice sessions and qualifying will take place on the Friday, with the car racing on the Saturday.
