Highlights of the Day
LITTLE Giants
Alan Poulter won a tribute to the late Chris Carlisle-Kitz. The Ford Corsair won the 1st Heat.
In Heat 2 Terrance Botes in his mighty Mini beats John Ten in the Protea to second. Gary Stacey got away and won.
Pre 1969 Legends Production Cars
The Dutch Safari came clever of them. Heat one was won by Martin Bylevelt in the Chev Camaro.
The first heat was red flagged after one lap when Michiel Campagne in the Black Widow and Djurk Venter in the 1970 Cobra touched. Nothing to serious.
Alan Poulter returned after an almost two year lay-off. The Volvo 122 put up an amazing turn of speed which elevated car and driver to class B.
The second heat rocked, and the crowd roared when Lee Thompson in the big red Galaxie and Hennie Groenewald battle of line honours. These Legend cars of the 1960’s reflect what production car racing was all about before technology took over. Brute force no such thing as ABS brakes and little by way of down force.
The results on our website do not reflect track finishing orders. There were plenty of time penalties.
Lee going straight with others trying to avoid him. Even Lee got a big fright when the Galaxie throttle got stuck wide open.
Another revelation was Stiaan Kriel who rattled the Class B (now class A) in the Studebaker Lark into 3rd place. Sideways and wide – and the people loved it.
International Sport Racing Prototypes
Franco Scribante produced the most immaculate car of the weekend – the Gunston Chevron B19. HE WON! Jonathan tried hard to take on Franco but his B8 but could not hold on.
Mark du Toit’s Lola T70 Le Mans won. Russel fear claimed 3rd overall in class B. on his first visit to Zwartkops in his Lola T70.
Lord Greg Thornton (two US Historic Formula One Champions) Pre 1970 2,0 Litre cars returned to race Piet Bredenham / Tony Martin Chevron B8. This is a welcome addition to our grids and there are still more to come.
The 21st South African Tourist Trophy
Warren Lombard Wins!!!
Four times Warren has seen victory in the T.T slip past him, this year not so! He won, hard driving, a well-prepared car and tactical application. He won by 20 seconds over the 45 minutes with James Temple second. James lost his lead advantage by remaining out through a safety car period. Peter Baily held up the Ford GT40 honours in third place.
Our great supporter from Sweden, Kennet Pearson could not get his cars out of Europe in time. He took over the Blue Daytona no 21. The pair came 5th overall.
This is a new event which will be promoted on special days. There are many racing icons of the past being rebuilt or are stationary in museums. The owners are not prepared to race them in events but can now present and drive them at controlled racing speeds. Saturday the 29th of January was the first of the events from a Wembley Stadium Hot-Rod to Paulo Cavalieri’s magnificent Ferrari 250 GT produced something truly unique, included was Grant Viljoen’s re-creation of the Mercedes 300SEL which won the SPA 24 Hour in 1971!
There were 2 awards for the event:
Best presented – the Merc of Grant Viljoen
The car that evoked the precious memories of the 1960’s – Brian Rowlings in the Van Rooyen Mustang.
Thank You, Marlboro Crane Hire, for your support of the Legends of the 9 Hour
Oliver Dalais in his GT40.
