Racing Jaguar returns to South Africa at Passion for Speed weekend at Zwartkops.

| From the day that the Jaguar was introduced to the public it was perceived to be a competition car. In production sports car racing it certainly achieve fame and glory in the hands of Grand Prix Aces Graham Hill, Rog Savadori… however when it came to world championship racing it was too heavy and lacked the punch of the new Ferrari GTO. So Jaguar built 14 light weight coupes with an aluminium block engine developing some 340 BHP. This improved the Jaguar competition performance in world sports car events. The advent of the Shelby Cobras and Ferrari 250 LM did however put an end to the light weight E- Types for prime competition. |
| Although the E-Types was relatively short lived it did achieve icon status and even being now some 50 years old the pressure is on Jaguar to produce a continuation batch of 10 “new” cars in 2015. |
| Despite being 50 years old the E-Type Jaguar has never stopped racing and today represents five star status at all the major revival and historic events around the world. |
| In South Africa only a handful of E-Type Jaguars were actively racing in period and even less in our historic racing series. The racing E-Type is best remembered for the light weight special which Peter Sutcliff brought to South Africa in 1964 and despite problems claimed third overall in the 1964 the Nine Hour at Kyalami. |
| At the end of January we will have the privilege of seeing a racing semi-light weight in action in the Castrol Tourist Trophy. Chris Chiles who raced a GT40 at Zwartkops in the early 2000’s is coming to South Africa and has entered this very special car in a very special event. |
| The sight and sound of a great car being raced in the 45 minute Tourist trophy is really something to look forward to. |
