Hotly contested Extreme Festival national finale sees host of 2026 champions crowned

Zwartkops Raceway saw seven national champions crowned in this past weekend’s (16-17 October) action-packed Extreme Festival season finale for the national roster.

The SunBet ZX10R Masters Cup was one of two titles already decided heading into the weekend. In both races, it was the former champion of the all-Kawasaki ZX10R series, Clinton Seller, who beat the recently crowned 2026 champion Damion Purificati. In Race 1, Trevor Westman completed the podium, while Race 2 saw James Barson hold off Hein McMahon for the final spot.

Seller also took both Class A wins, with Westman and McMahon trading the runner-up spots. Purificati took a double win in Class B. Piper again completed the Race 2 podium, this time behind Byron Rothquel. Reginald Seale took the first Class C win, followed by Alfie Swanepoel and Joao Cruz. Barson took the class win in Race 2, with Seale and Johan le Roux completing the podium.

One round at Red Star Raceway remains for the series, where some class titles will be decided.

Charl Arangies (Mercedes-Benz AMG GT3 EVO) is the new Extreme SuperCars Driven By Dunlop Champion. This came after three races, in which he beat his series and GT3 Class rival, as well as outgoing champion Jonathan du Toit (Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO) in the first. Du Toit turned the tables in the latter two, but Arangies maintained his points lead and took the crown.

Karah Hill (Audi R8 LMS GT3) took all three Class A wins, finishing on the overall race podiums. Sheyur Harpel (Porsche 991.1 GT3 Cup MR) took the Class B wins, while Peter Bailey (BMW Z4) triumphed in Class C.

With one more round remaining at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, Hannes Scheepers finds himself in a strong position to take this year’s Astron Energy Polo Cup crown. In the first race for the all-Volkswagen Polo GTI brigade, he beat Jayden Goosen and Mauro da Luz, while his main rival, Charl Smalberger, only finished in eighth place. The latter’s fortunes improved with one place in the second race, but this time, Da Luz beat Scheepers, with Shiren Rajpaul completing the podium.

In the Masters Class, defending champion Wayne Masters beat his rival Derick Smalberger in Race 1, with John Kruger third. Masters retired after seven laps while in the lead of the second race, which allowed Smalberger beat Kruger and Michael Barbaglia.

Aqil Alibhai is the new Investchem MSA4 champion. In Race 1, he beat his main rival Mikel Bezuidenhout to the win, while Troy Dolinschek completed the podium. Alibhai and Bezuidenhout were involved in an early incident in Race 2. This sidelined Bezuidenhout, while Alibhai went on to make it two wins for the day. Guido Bidoli and Chase Haskins completed the podium.

Behind them, in the Formula Ford Kent races, Nicholas van Weely beat Andrew Horne and Alex Vos in both races.

Julian van der Watt (Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI) took his maiden South African Touring Cars crown. All he needed was a fifth-place finish, while Keegan Campos bounced back after an engine failure on his BMW 128ti during practice to take the Race 1 win. Jason Coetzee and outgoing champion Michael van Rooyen made it two Toyota Corollas on the podium. Van der Watt finished his season in style with the Race 2 win, after the race was red-flagged due to an incident in the SATC SupaCup pack behind them. Van Rooyen, who announced his retirement moments earlier, took the runner-up spot, with Coetzee third.

Rory Atkinson and Judd Berthold completed the Race 1 podium. Berthold again took third place later in the day, behind David Franco, who recorded his best result in the series.

Nabil Abdool, who already took his second consecutive GR Media Challenge title, made it 12 wins from 12 starts in 2026. In both races, he beat Craig Nicholson and Brandon Jacobs.

One more event remains on the Extreme Festival programme: the regional roster’s season finale, also hosted at Zwartkops Raceway on 20-21 November.
