Champion of Champions Legends Pre-1970
From 1966 to 1974 the USA had one of the greatest Production Car Racing Formulas. The Great Trans-Am Series. Trans-Am was the product of the great “Pony” car boom which emerged in the late fifties and early sixties when a new generation of young and “thirty somethings” demanded performance. It started with the Corvettes, Studebaker Hawks and Shelby Cobras but the BIG break came in 1965 with the Ford Mustang.
Despite scepticism from Ford management the Mustang took off with unprecedented demand and soon found itself on the race tracks of America. The Mustang forced every other USA manufacturer to build similar cars and take up the challenge on the race tracks.
The result was Ford Mustang, Cougar – Chev Camaro, Pontiac GTO, Chrysler – Dodge Charger, Comet and driven in very serious competition by Formula One, Indy Car, Nascar Champions. It was "Champion of Champions" motor racing at its very best. On the programme today we have our Champion of Champions event, with Ford Galaxies, Ford Mustang, Chev Camaros, Chev Nova and a Datsun 240 Z. All to be raced by our South African Champions.
No.9 – Ben Morganrood, multiple South African Champion in a 1965 Mustang. No.170 – Leeroy Poulter, our Dakar Hero, Kart, Production Car, Rally Champion in a 1965 Ford Fairlane. No.65 – Jeffrey Kruger, VW Cup Champion in Europe and Far East. No.28 – Michiel Campagne, Dutch Champion in a 1964 Ford Galaxie.
No.12 – Lee Thompson, National Single Seater Champion in a 1968 Chev Camaro. No.13 – Mark du Toit, Formula Ford Champion plus big banger Saloon and Sports Car Championship in a 1968 Chev Camaro. No.3 – Chris Wilson from UK in a 1967 Chev Camaro.
No.111 – Thomas Falkiner, 1965 Ford Mustang and motoring scribe who takes on the Champions. No.88 – Hennie Groenewald, another SA multiple National Track Champion. No.38 – Colin Clay, Wesbank Production Car Class Championship winner in a 1969 Datsun 240 Z. No.6 – Stuart Grant, known for his efforts in a Mercedes-Benz in Historic Racing and editor of Classic and Performance Car. No.96 – Christian Nordal from Sweden in a 1965 Ford Mustang.
Plus three other possible entries – Ford Fairlane, Galaxie and Mustang… Champion of Champions is no longer a manufacturers challenge, but a supreme test of driving skills in cars that were meant to go fast but with little emphases on stopping or turning.

Full weekend tickets can be bought at Computicket or at the Zwartkops office before the event for a discounted rate of R170 per adult and R100 per student, with children under 12 going in for free.
Tickets sold at the gate on Saturday will cost R190 per adult, R110 per student and children under 12 free.
Friday or Sunday tickets only will cost R90 per adult and R70 per student.
