Legends of the 9 Hour

Saturday, 4th July – Round 5 at Phakisa.

Clive Densham the hero of Phakisa

Only twelve Legends made it to Phakisa on the 4th of July. The quality of the field was as always representative of the Golden Age of motor racing. The front of the grid was supposed to be the Ford GT40 (Peter Lindenberg FIA), Mark Lauth’s Lola T70 Coupe, Mark du Toit’s Lola T70 Spyder and the red Daytona to be raced by Colin Clay. Unfortunately the immaculate orange GT40 had suspected valve problems, the Lola Coupe rewiring, clutch problems so it was left to Mark’s Lola and Colin’s Daytona.

Clive Densham the hero of Phakisa

Whilst Mark had two relatively easy wins it was the Alfa GT of Clive Densham who beat the rest and finished second overall on the day. Clive and the Alfa really came into their own – a magnificent site of the Alfa finishing ahead of the V8 Daytona. In the first heat Louis de Jager in the Lola T212 joined the fray and chased the Lola ahead of the Daytona followed by Densham.

The U2 brigade was represented by Gino Allasio, Larry Davies and the BMW of John Simpson. Gino won with Larry second just ahead of a charging BMW. Terence Botes and Robin Clark both won their classes as did Chad Ten Doeschate in his VPW Alfa. Clive Winterstein put in a remarkable turn of speed in the Lotus 23. A select few but good site and sound.

Next round – Zwartkops 19th September 2015.
