Legends of the 9 Hour

Midvaal – 7th July 2018 “A Full Cycle”

A track with a difference – the other way around.

A first-time experience for the Legends Series. Your chairman was associated with Midvaal when a provisional concept of its establishment was formed in 1986. The layout was more or less what transpired in 1989 except that the pits were in the centre of the circuit (midway down the main straight) and the direction was anti-clockwise as in more recent times.

The field was made up of Pim Pieterse’s Lola T70, U2 Production Cars and LITTLE Giants. Some 14 of them, plus the Pre’1990 Sports & GT cars making a total of 17 on the grid. Obviously, the Green Lola led the way with Larry Wilford, unfortunately the bumps on the track soon took their toll and the Lola broke its drive shaft.  The U2 Volvo’s of Alan Poulter and Vic Campher took command with Jonathan and Mark in the TAR Alfa’s and the BMW of Marc Miller – all together. Their lap times were very close, ranging 1.21.3 (Jonathan) and a 1.22.1(Alan Poulter). At the end of the day it was Alan who took the honours, followed by Vic, Jonathan, Mark and Marc.

LITTLE Giants produced the ongoing battle between Chris Carlise-Kitz’s Anglia and Ishmael Baloyi, only this time Gavin Holt in the MGA split the two in the first heat with an amazing turn of pace. In the second heat Ishmael’s Dart got away and Chris had to be content with second. However, Les McLeod came into his own and whilst finishing third had almost identical times as the leading two. Gavin Holt came home in fourth. Overall on the day, Ishmael won from Chris and Gavin. Les McLeod took Class B honours and Chris Visage won Class C. A long day, when you were first to qualify and almost last to race, but all in all a good days racing.
