News: Zwartkops 1st of February – 50 years of Ford Mustang

Zwartkops will celebrate 50 years of the icon pony car Ford Mustang on the 1st of February 2014. The Ford Mustang made its debut in 1964 and despite the doubting Thomas’s of the time became the ultimate “pony” car of the Golden Age of Motoring in the sixties. It fitted just about every criteria that the post-world war II baby boomers wanted.
Four of the floor, a big powerful V8-engine up front – a sporting iconic coupe body which could transport four people – it hit the mark spot on. Not since the model T Ford of the 1920’s could Ford produce a family car with a sporting image, that just about every “boomer” aspired to have. Even more so when Carol Shelby entered the scene and produced a road racing version.

That was 50 years ago and the image profile and aspiration has not changed.
On 1st February 2014 Zwartkops will pay tribute to the Mustangs, when some six/eight racing versions take to the track in the Legends of the 9 Hour Production Car race – headed by Franco Scribante, Thomas Falkiner, Ferdi van Niekerk Junior, Chris Ballard (UK), Harmen van Putten (Dutch), and the SP Racing / TAR FIA versions.

The Legends race will be gripped by Mustang fever as these cars were not only very effective racers by just as exciting on the road. Whilst the Mustang made its debut in 1964 they only appeared on South African race tracks in 1965 – the Rand Grand Prix at Kyalami early December of that year. The drivers – one Basil van Rooyen and the other Koos Swanepoel who waged serious battles on and off the track in 1966 inspiring a whole generation of aspirational racing drivers.
Further details to follow as Zwartkops honours these icons at the international on 1st Feb 2014.
